May 2021: The Apps. Track. Sleep.

Howdy!

I’m currently on a silent meditation retreat, so expect a full roundup next month on how it all went specifically in relation to my sleep.

The Apps.

A new invite only social media app that’s audio only. Took me a few day but I’m now loving it. Last week I spoke to a bunch of random people and even an astronaut. Could CH be the next new big thing? I’m going to say… yes. Personally, once you learn how to use it for the right groups and follow the right things you’re interested in (for example the Oura Ring club) you can really gain some insight and meet like-minded people. I love that you can save upcoming events to your calendar, especially if you only want to listen in to a specific chat on a certain day. Instagram message me “Clubhouse Roundup” and I’ll happily send you one of my 5 free invites.

An audio-narrated walking app that lets you trace back history since the big bang, literally with each step you physically take. Start the app, put your phone in your pocket and begin walking and listen along. Walking 4.6km with this app covers 4600 million years ago. As someone who enjoys long walks, I found it to be really immersive that left me with a multitude of emotions once finishing the walk… that I was completely not expecting. There are a few breaks during the walk for reflecting and having a quick rest, which is optional, but I found them to be perfectly timed for me. If you do check it out, make sure you get into nature, as traffic and construction noises can really take you out of that immersion. Originally a crowdfunded and paid app, but it is now free to download with an optional donation.

  • KAYTRANADA — Vex Oh
I actually discovered this song in a Clubhouse music room this month. V catchy. YouTube

Sleep.

  • Last week I jumped on clubhouse and randomly ended up in a room hosted by guy interviewing astronaut Scott Parazynski (@astrodocscott)

I had no idea what I wanted to spontaneously ask a frigging astronaut. Who wakes up in the morning thinking they’ll have that option in their day? Let alone knows what to ask one! So being me/theroundup I figured I’d ask about sleep. Namely how he slept in space and if his dreams were any different up there.

Apparently the pillow has been specially designed by nasa with a velcro strip so their head doesn’t detach from the pillow during sleep in zero gravity sleeping bags.
Also mentioned was all the adrenaline pumping through his veins after entering space, making it harder to sleep, and rightfully so. But after that rush finally wears off Scott mentioned really vivid dreams, and very vivid dreams a few days after getting back to Earth. Was really interesting to get his perspective. Usually rooms are 100–300+ people, but I guess I happened to be in the right place at the right time.

As it was a quick “audience” QA session I didn’t have time to delve into if he thought his sleep quality was better in zero gravity, but that’d be interesting for me to look into myself at a later date… I’m sure someone has covered it in a book. I also enquired about meditation but he said he doesn’t do it however was curious to try it in the future. One other tip I heard was he always in his life has used a future success visualisation mentality before attempting something such as luge racing or summiting Mt. Everest (Space and Everest? What a beast). Totally a nice dude and a chat I won’t forget for a while. So, for sleep, I challenge you reader to attempt a future success visualisation of having an excellent night’s sleep. You may find it beneficial.

I also shared a bit of my sleep journey in a sleep room on CH. It was interesting to hear from like-minded people. As a warning I will say now, if you do start vibing with the App be mindful of your time spent on it. Maybe set a screen time limit if you do find yourself getting hooked. I find CH almost akin to interactive podcasts. There’s a lot of time wasting rooms but a few groups you can gradually uncover thanks to the search feature and asking fellow members what groups they are interested in. However, don’t forget to sleep.

Thanks.

That’s the best of the month, from me to you.
